Understanding Pantry Pests
Pantry pests include beetles, weevils, and moths that infest stored foods. UF/IFAS notes that many arrive in food purchased for the home and that some remain active year-round in suitable Florida conditions. An infestation is not necessarily a sign of an unclean kitchen.
The Indianmeal moth is common in Florida. Its larvae feed on grain products, dried fruit, seeds, pet food, and spices. Silken webbing or larvae in a package are reasons to inspect nearby supplies, too.
Plan Your Holiday Pantry Check
Addressing pantry pests before holiday baking in South Florida starts with the ingredients you already have. Set aside time to inspect older packages before buying replacements. Include dry pet food and birdseed stored nearby.
Shop and Store Carefully
Pass over damaged packages. Store dry ingredients in tightly closed glass, metal, or sturdy plastic containers. Use older products first and buy quantities you expect to use soon.
If You Find Insects
Locate the affected food and discard infested products in a sealed bag. Inspect other susceptible foods. Vacuum shelf corners and crevices, then empty the vacuum promptly. Wash shelves and let them dry before restocking.
Household sprays do not control insects inside food packages. University of Minnesota Extension does not recommend insecticides in stored-food cupboards. Do not spray food or food packaging; seek professional guidance if you are unsure about treatment.
When to Ask for Help
If insects continue appearing after affected food is removed, contact JP Miller & Sons Services, Inc. to discuss an inspection. Our South Florida pest-control services emphasize prevention, inspection, and appropriate treatment. There is no need to wait until your first holiday baking day to ask questions.
