Signs You Have a Cricket Problem

The most obvious sign is the chirping. Technically called stridulation, it’s produced when male crickets rub their wings together to attract mates, and it gets louder as temperatures rise. Crickets are nocturnal and drawn to warmth, moisture, and bright lights, so you’ll often find them clustered near exterior fixtures, doorways, or damp areas inside.

Beyond the noise, watch for physical damage. House crickets chew on clothing, carpets, paper, and stored fabric, so unexplained holes or fraying in textiles can signal an indoor infestation. Outside, brown spongy patches in an otherwise healthy lawn are a common sign of mole crickets tunneling beneath the turf and severing grass roots. Neither problem is likely to resolve without treatment.

Cricket Species Common in Broward County

Not every cricket behaves the same way or causes the same type of damage. Knowing which species is present shapes the treatment approach.

House Crickets

Light yellowish-brown with three dark bands on the head, house crickets grow about three-quarters to one inch long. They’re the species most often found indoors, near baseboards, kitchens, and other warm areas, and their chirping is the sound most Broward residents associate with an infestation.

Field Crickets

Field crickets live primarily outdoors and feed on plants, but they move into structures when outdoor conditions shift. Larger and darker than house crickets, they tend to congregate near exterior walls and entry points before finding their way inside.

Mole Crickets

Tawny and southern mole crickets are the species most damaging to Florida lawns. They tunnel through soil, severing grass roots and leaving turf brown and spongy. The damage is often mistaken for drought stress until the population grows large enough to make the tunneling visible.

Camel Crickets

Humpbacked and wingless, camel crickets prefer damp, cluttered spaces. Garages, mulch beds, and areas with stored materials are typical harborage sites. They don’t chirp, so homeowners often don’t realize they’re present until they spot them directly.

Cricket Prevention Between Treatments

Treatment handles the active population, but a few practical steps help keep crickets from returning.

Seal entry points: Cracks and gaps around doors, windows, and foundations give crickets a path inside. Weatherstripping, door sweeps, and caulk address the most common openings.
Reduce exterior moisture: Fix leaking hose bibs, improve drainage near the foundation, and clear standing water. A dry perimeter is a far less attractive one.
Switch exterior lighting: Bright white bulbs attract insects. Yellow or sodium-vapor bulbs produce less of the spectrum crickets respond to and can meaningfully reduce nighttime congregation near entry points.
Clear harborage sites: Woodpiles, mulch beds, and debris stacked against the foundation give crickets shelter close to the home. Moving those materials away from the structure removes a staging area.
